This strat seems heavily dependent on whether Lightstalker puts your Nether Faerie Dragon to sleep, and possibly how many Moth Balls hit or how much damage Moth Dust does. If you can get lucky the Dragon can finish the fight on its own, if you do not it dies before Lightstalker does.

Granted, this could depend on the Dragon's breed (mine is P/B).

I've been testing different stuff on this fight, and I finally figured out what makes it reliable: an S/S Faerie Dragon. All the other breeds will always be slower than Lightstalker, but S/S is faster once Lightstalker's Flying passive is disabled, allowing you to avoid ever getting hit by Moth Dust.

A note stating that there's a small risk of RNG nonsense involved with the other breeds might be useful.

Agree with Anonymous, S/S Nether Faerie makes the difference. I usually use my Sprite Darter whenever a strat calls for the NFD (just cause he's so pretty!). "Most" of the time they are interchangeable. However, their stats are slightly different and in this case, the S/S NFD's speed, which is slightly higher, tips the scale in his favor and avoids the moth dust. He is even able to take down Needleback if RNG smiles on you that day.

Since MoP days I've always run Lil XT + carry1 + Onyxian Whelpling. That was with 80% hit and 25% stun/sleep. Now thats 100% and still 25% stun/sleep. I replaced last pet to try and get a quick cleanup and this is what I've come up with:

Lil XT 1-2-2
Carry1
Sentinel's Companion 1-2-2

Heartbroken into Tantrum, Zap till die. Switch carry1 in/out and your Sentinel should be facing off a 441 health Lightstalker, perhaps higher health if Sleep. Soulrush regardless, Ethreal the Headbutt, Peck to win.

Heartbroken into Tantrum works on Hyena in Jade Forest as well. Good for those flyver/aquatic/beast lineup, always kills first pet and brings next two low for cleanup.

Brilliant! Thanks!

This strat works so well! Thanks for sharing.

Lightstalker comes in
Turn 1 Swap to your Level Pet
That let the level pet eats a really big hit from the moth. FailFish

Warkai wrote on 08/29/2016

This is nitpicky but i noticed that if at the end you moonfire on the third turn you can kill needleback then and there. The new rotation would be life exchange arcane blast then get the dragon buff moonfire. Of course if you know your not getting to turn three you would moonfire. I will test it over tomorrow.

Warkai responded on 08/30/2016

It may have been RNG but i had it happen again and this time it was forced on me moonfire was not off cd. So i arcane blasted and then moon fired i did not kill him this time but left him at 17. I still think that the way i suggested is better because in either instance it wasnt like i wouldnt get the moonfire in and moonfire with dragon buff. smile

Doesn't work with a P/B Drake if Lightstalker gets in a sleep.

Orpho responded on 08/18/2016

This strat just doesn't work consistently for me. H/P and P/B drakes are my options, and both of them die more than half the time to Lightstalker, either because of a sleep from Moth Dust, or a lucky set of Moth Balls.

Turn 1 is missing, but you should use bombing run first.

Thanks Brad! I fixed that error :-)

Light how I'm annoyed by the sound that is made by eating Needleback I believe. :(

ziboo wrote on 01/17/2016

Works great. Just make sure the 5+ pet has at least 470+ health. Had the moth crit a 469 hit once!

In a future update I want to include minimum health points the Rematch strings so it is taken into account in addition to the level requirement. It's not active, yet, but I added it to the database already, thanks!

Nice strategy where you can bring a level 1 pet along. However due to some spells involved, it has a risk of about 10% to fail.

Variation of Mel's strategy from Wowhead.com - this one takes very long but usually works fine.

Super easy and reliable strategy, but it takes VERY long ;-)
5Alternative 5Alternative 5Pets used in this fight:
